Dance training helps children develop confidence, self-discipline and musicality.  

Alberta Ballet is proud to feature live music as part of our training. With a talented pianist in each ballet class, our teachers focus on engaging the class from start to finish, without ever skipping a beat.  

Designed to foster a love for ballet in a safe, nurturing environment for children ages 6-11, our Children's Ballet Programming (Recreational, Experienced, Syllabus and Commercial Jazz) is outlined below.

Recreational Ballet supports the development of ballet technique, music appreciation and artistic exploration – all in a relaxed, enjoyable and accessible environment.

Dance Experience: None required

Time Commitment: Two ballet classes each week.

Choose between Full-Year, Fall, or Winter Sessionals: 

For families who would prefer a partial year program, we offer a fall sessional (Sept. – Jan.) and a winter sessional (Feb. - Jun.)

Dance Experience: Required

Time Commitment: Students in the Experienced Program attend 2 ballet classes per week. Students in the Experienced Level 3 or higher attend 1 contemporary class per week.

Contemporary (Level 3 and above):

Once students advance to Level 3, a weekly contemporary class is added to their training. Contemporary class complements ballet with the exploration of different movement styles.
 

Syllabus Ballet:

Students in Experienced Ballet Level 3 and up have the option to add Syllabus Ballet to their study. The syllabus class focuses on material required for Cecchetti method exams.

Students are not required to take the exam, but Syllabus Ballet is a great way to enhance their program and training.

Commercial Jazz Technique:

This class is available for dancers registered in a full-year Children's Ballet or Teen Ballet program. Commercial Jazz Technique class is designed for dancers to explore different jazz styles and techniques to supplement their regular ballet studies. Set to contemporary music, dancers will explore different qualities and dynamics of movement. This class fosters an appreciation for multiple genres by studying the historical origins of popular dance.

*Students registered in the experienced program may be eligible to audition to perform in Alberta Ballet’s The Nutcracker and other productions containing children's casts.

Please note: A nonrefundable production fee for the Year End Performance is included in full-year and Winter Sessional registrations. Participation in the Year End Performance is optional but strongly recommended. This fee includes wardrobe, theatre rental, videographer and other costs associated with the performance in the Jubilee Auditorium.
